2. What AskSocrat is, and is not
AskSocrat is a software service that lets you exchange written messages with a large language model that has been instructed to imitate the rhetorical style of the historical Socrates and which retrieves passages from public-domain primary sources. AskSocrat is entertainment and educational software. It is not a substitute for a licensed therapist, lawyer, doctor, financial adviser, or member of clergy. The persona is fictional and does not represent the views of the historical Socrates, of the Operator, or of any natural person.
3. Eligibility
You must be at least 16 years of age (or the digital age of consent in your jurisdiction, whichever is higher) to use AskSocrat. By creating an account or starting a paid plan you confirm that you meet this requirement.
4. Accounts
You may begin a dialogue without an account. After three exchanges we will ask for your e-mail address and a password of at least eight characters so that the conversation may continue across visits. Keep your credentials private; you are responsible for activity on your account. If you suspect unauthorised access, write to [email protected] and we will lock the account on receipt.
5. Plans and payment
Three subscription plans are available, in EUR, VAT-inclusive where applicable:
- Kykeon — €7 per week, auto-renewing weekly.
- Maza — €20 per month, auto-renewing monthly.
- Symposion — €200 per year, auto-renewing yearly.
Payments are processed by Stripe Payments Europe, Ltd. ("Stripe"). We never see your full card number. By subscribing you also accept Stripe's end-user terms. Renewals occur on the same calendar day each cycle until you cancel. To cancel, visit your account page or e-mail [email protected]. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the then-current period; we do not pro-rate part-periods.
6. Free use limits
Without a subscription, the Service is rate-limited and may be paused after a small number of exchanges. We may change those limits as we learn what makes the service sustainable; we will not lower the limits for an active paid plan within its current billing cycle.
7. Refunds
Our standalone Refund Policy applies. In summary: a 14-day right of withdrawal under EU consumer law, exercised by writing to [email protected]; pro-rata refunds for annual plans cancelled within 30 days of renewal at our discretion; no refunds for weekly plans (the period is too short for the right to bear meaning).
8. Acceptable use
You agree not to use AskSocrat to:
- generate content that is unlawful, defamatory, or hateful in your jurisdiction or in Portugal;
- solicit medical, legal, or psychological advice that you intend to act upon without a licensed professional;
- attempt to reverse-engineer the system prompts, knowledge base, or model weights;
- send messages that solicit child sexual abuse material, sexual content involving real identifiable persons, or instructions for weapons capable of mass harm;
- scrape the Service, run automated agents against it, or resell its output as your own product;
- use it to spam, defraud, or harass any natural person.
We reserve the right to suspend any account that violates this section. We will refund the unused portion of any paid period in such a case unless the violation involved fraud against us.
9. Intellectual property
The interface, the persona, the code, and the curated knowledge base are owned by the Operator or its licensors. The historical primary sources we cite are in the public domain; some translations we redistribute are licensed under Creative Commons BY-SA 4.0 and remain so. The text of your messages remains yours; you grant the Operator a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to process them solely to operate the Service. We do not train models on your messages.
10. AI output disclaimer
AskSocrat's replies are generated by a large language model and may be wrong, fabricated, or misleading even when they sound persuasive. Citations to primary sources are real but the connection between a citation and the surrounding paragraph may be loose. Do not act on AskSocrat's words without verification.
11. Service changes and termination
We may add, change, or remove features at any time. We may also discontinue the Service entirely. If we discontinue a paid feature or the whole Service, we will refund the unused portion of any paid period.
12. Liability
To the maximum extent allowed by law, the Operator's aggregate liability for any claim arising out of your use of AskSocrat is limited to the greater of (a) the fees you paid for the Service in the twelve months preceding the claim, or (b) €100. We do not exclude liability for fraud, gross negligence, or for breaches that mandatory consumer law forbids us from limiting.
13. Governing law and forum
These Terms are governed by the laws of Portugal. Disputes go to the courts of Lisboa, save where mandatory consumer law preserves your right to sue in your country of residence.
14. Changes to these Terms
When we materially change these Terms we will write to the e-mail on your account at least 14 days before the change takes effect, and update the "in effect since" date at the top of this page. If you do not agree to the new Terms, cancel before they take effect; continued use is acceptance.
